Cactus Garden - Jardin de Cactus
What can I see and do during my visit?
In the village of Guatiza, situated north-east of the island, you will find the beautiful cactus garden Jardin de Cactus. It is like many other attractions on the island, definitely worth a visit. Cesar Manrique's soul is involved and is a great place to spend some time, when you are in Lanzarote. In this huge garden, which is a wonderful example of an architectural intervention integrated into the landscape, there are more than 7,000 specimens of more than 1,000 cactus species from such different places in the world like Peru, Mexico, Chile, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Morocco.
Jameos del Agua
Known as a jameo, it is a geographic feature similar to a sink hole and is caused when a lava tube (an underground tunnel created by flowing magma) ceiling collapses in on itself, or as in this case, when natural gases accumulate and blow the ceiling off, opening the tunnel to the sky.
Los Jameos del Agua, or "The Water Jameo," is a partially collapsed section of a larger volcanic tube system extending out from Montaña La Corona. The whole structure known as the "Tunnel of Atlantis" is the largest submerged volcanic tunnel in the world and Los Jameos del Agua is found near the end of the tunnel system on the north coast of the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
Cesar Manrique House
The incredible house that´s been created within a series of volcanic bubbles by local born artist and architect, César Manrique, never fails to blow visitors away. Manrique returned home from America in 1966, just as the tourist industry onLanzarote began to take off. Aware of the dangers, the well-connected César was determined to avert the threat of his beloved island becoming buried beneath a sea of five star concrete.
Timanfaya National Park
The Volcano Park at Timanfaya is Lanzarote's most popular tourist attraction. Every year, close to one million people visited this unique lava scape – home to a sea of colourful dormant volcanoes and spent cones. Following a route originally defined by the island born artist and architect César Manrique.
Manrique is credited with having discerned the optimum route through the park. He also designed the restaurant which sits on top of the Islote de Hilario, where the car park and coach pick up point are. The restaurant El Diablo offers marvellous panoramic views - which are particularly impressive at sunset.
